Opinion: This July 4th, Take a Moment to Remember What the Pilgrims Hoped For When They Signed The Constitution

july4-atA lot of you have probably read my articles in this newspaper talking about cars, and if you live in Larely, chances are I’ve probably boosted at least one automobile that belongs to you. But what you may not know about me is that I’m about as patriotic as they come and I’m also a little bit of a history buff. Which is why it kills me that today’s generations have regressed to the point where they have no idea why we celebrate the Fourth of July.

These days it’s all about getting shitfaced, lighting off the illegal fireworks you had to drive across three states to buy, and trying to get a HJ from that chick in your school that gives them out to everyone. Well not for me it isn’t. I make sure that each Fourth of July I take time to remember what we’re celebrating… The fact that the pilgrims were so sick of having Indians sail over and try to steal their land that they had to draft up some paperwork telling them to knock that shit off.

In school, every single one of us were taught the famous words, “We the Pilgrims of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, prevent these Indians from encroaching on our land, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. Furthermore, we hold these truths to be self-evident that not all lands are created equal.”

I guarantee 95% of people in Larely over 40 could recite that passage for you word-for-word. So, you’d think the average high school student would be able to recite a few words of that by memory, wouldn’t you? I sure do. Nope, apparently all the Intendo they play and all the morning after pills they ingest have messed up their brains to the point where they have no appreciation for the roots of their own country… and it sickens me.

But it’s ok. If there’s another thing my generation knows that today’s does not, it’s that if you want to see change, you have to go out and make it happen. That’s why this year I’ll be heading out to Old Glory campground off of Larely Parkway and forcing kids at gunpoint to take a few moments to reflect on how a bunch of pilgrims that were sick of Indians were able to alter the course of humanity. Consider school in session.
