“C-A-T” Again Good Enough to Capture Larely Spelling Bee Title

Larely, CA – For the third time in the last five years, the word “C-A-T” proved good enough to bring home the Larely Spelling Bee title. After nearly five hours of competition, this year’s winner, Jacob Kenny was able to correctly spell the word and bring the title back to Erik Estrada Elementary, one of Larely’s most prestigious schools.
Kenny, who put himself in position to win after being the only contestant to correctly spell “D-O-G” in the previous round, seized the opportunity when it presented itself and absolutely nailed the anticipated winning word.
Though he was visibly nervous when given the word, Kenny kept his composure and asked for a definition. When it was revealed to be “any of several carnivores of the family Felidae, as the lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, etc” a faint smile could be seen on his face. He nodded a few times, traced out the word on the back of his name badge, and spoke “C-A-T” into the microphone.
After doing so, the crowd remained completely silent as they awaited confirmation from the judges. This proved to be a little bit of a challenge, as the judges intentionally prolonged the suspense by taking more time than usual before making their ruling. After it was confirmed and Kenny was named the winner, confetti poured down from the ceiling and he was presented with the trophy. Unfortunately, his parents were unable to attend the event because in Kenny’s words, “They think this whole thing is a joke so they decided to watch one of my younger brother’s videotaped football practices instead of coming here.”
If the achievements of previous winners are any sort of indicator, Kenny is destined for big things in his lifetime. Chuck Scanlan, who won the Larely Spelling Bee in 1995, was recently promoted to Assistant Day Manager over at Boxcar Liquors, Daniel Yeager [1987 Champion] has enjoyed a long and fulfilling career working the overnight desk shift at Larely’s Velvety Conch Motel, and Craig O’Neil [1982 Champion] was recently released early from prison for good behavior.
In addition to the $100 savings bond that Kenny received for his victory, he was also given an autographed photo of Larely Mayor Vern Bixler and a refurbished T.I. Speak & Spell.
