ITF to Investigate Gasquet Match with 147 Bathroom Breaks

London, England – The International Tennis Federation [ITF] announced today that in light of Richard Gasquet’s testing positive for cocaine, they will be taking a second look at a tennis match in which he took an unprecedented 147 bathroom breaks.
ITF spokesman Neil Robinson said they hope giving the match a second look will help them build a case for their hearing against Gasquet, which they expect to take place within the next sixty days.
The match in question occurred on February 10, 2009 at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Gasquet was playing fellow countryman Paul-Henri Mathieu, and during the span of the three set match, which Gasquet lost 6-3, 6-7(4), 3-6, he asked permission to use the restroom an amazing 147 times, a rate of nearly five per game.
At the time, Gasquet said that a case of food poisoning had left him with terrible diarrhea. However, in light of his recent positive cocaine test, officials have become a bit more skeptical.
Gasquet has dismissed the charge as completely false, saying, “If anyone had followed me into the bathroom that day, they would have known that I wasn’t doing coke in that stall. Rather, my bowels were trying to purge some bad sushi that I had eaten the previous day. As for my positive test from Florida, I am gathering together proof of my innocence and I will choose an appropriate moment to express myself.”
Examination of the video from the match in question was also inconclusive as Gasquet told reporters that he always grits his teeth while waiting to return serves, he always sniffs and rubs his nose during points, and even when matches are played on bright, sunny days, his pupils often become dilated as a result of a hereditary condition.
However, according to two distraught reporters from Le Monde, the match video could be construed as incriminating. According to them, users of cocaine often suffer from the exact same symptoms as Gasquet.
Gasquet could face a two year ban from tennis if he is found guilty. He is scheduled to meet with an ITF panel within the next sixty days.
