Omaha, NE – Looking to act before Nebraska lawmakers are able to change their “safe haven” law, Lynne Spears dropped off her seventeen year old daughter, Jamie Lynn, and five-month old granddaughter, Maddie, off at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha today.

Lynne Spears, who like many other parents, is taking advantage of a loophole in a law that is meant to protect infants, was relieved that she made it to the hospital in time. As she dropped the children off, she told hospital staff , “That girl’s been nothing but trouble since she stopped earning a steady paycheck from Nickelodeon. Because she’s no longer able to provide for me and the rest of the family, I had no choice but to drop her and her daughter off at this hospital so that some other family can look after her. I wish nothing but the best for her and her daughter born out of wedlock, but I no longer want to have anything to do with them.” Lynne also admitted that she tricked Jamie Lynn into the trip to Nebraska by saying they were going there to record an album of Nursery Rhymes for unwed teenage mothers.

The abandonment of Jamie Lynn and Maddie caps off a tumultuous year for Jamie Lynn and her mother. Just over a year ago, the picture was much different. Jamie Lynn was starring as Zoey Brooks on the emmy-nominated children’s show “Zoey 101” and even received a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award in the category of “Favorite TV Actress”. Outside of acting, she was also attending Parklane Academy in McComb, Mississippi, where she was on the cheerleading team. However, all that changed on December 18, 2007 when “OK!” magazine reported that Jamie Lynn was 12 weeks pregnant. The pregnancy and the resulting Maddie proved to be more than her mother could handle.

Many U.S. states have laws similar to the one in Nebraska, which is intended to allow parents to anonymously hand over an infant to a hospital without being prosecuted. However, Nebraska is the only state that failed to set an age limit. That oversight sparked parents of teenagers to drop their kids off, and as a result, of the 34 children that have been dropped off at Nebraska hospitals, all but six of them have been older than ten years old. Even more shocking is the fact that not one of the abandoned children has been an infant.

As more and more children are being left at the hospitals, Nebraska state legislature is working quickly to fix the problem by kicking off a special legislative session in order to close the loophole.
