Warrant Lead Singer Tearfully Admits Song “Cherry Pie” Actually About Cherry Pie
By Phil Buckridge • Nov 5th, 2008 • Section: MusicAfter years of adamant denials to the contrary, Warrant lead singer Jani Lane finally admitted today that their hit song “Cherry Pie”, was actually about cherry pie.
The song, which was released on the 1990 album of the same title, and climbed all the way to number ten on the U.S. Hot 100, has long been regarded as veiled song that contained numerous references to sex.
Lane’s admission came in a tearful interview with “The Larely Weekender” in which he lamented, “For years I’ve let people believe the supposed innuendo, and that’s a burden I can no longer carry. The song ‘Cherry Pie’, was actually about cherry pie.”
Lane recalled the story saying, “We were touring for ‘Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich’ and had just played a sold-out show in Jacksonville, FL. Right after the show, we got on our tour bus and started heading for our next show in Atlanta. About an hour into the trip we stopped at some hole-in-the-wall, 24-hour diner. Their specialty was cherry pie, so after my meal, I ordered a piece…and it changed the history of rock music as we know it. As soon as I got back onto the bus, the song came flowing out of me. I think I had it completed in less than twenty minutes.”
Lane admitted that for nearly twenty years he let others embrace the perceived notion that the song was a not so subtle tribute to sex. “What would you do? Here I was, this macho rock star who had written a heartfelt ode to the most exquisite tasting food to ever grace his palate. I knew we’d be finished as a band if people found the truth behind the song.”
Lane was also asked about a few different lyrics in the song to see how they could pertain to something other than sex. When questioned about the lyrics, “She wanted me to feed her, so I mixed up the batter, and she licked the beater.” Lane laughed, and immediately brushed off the sexual undertones saying, “I just trying to put myself in the shoes of someone that worked there and really trying to feel how gratifying it would be to both bake and serve cherry pies.”
As for the line, “If I think about baseball I’ll swing all night, yea”, Lane explained that it was a tribute to America. People always talk about baseball and apple pie being two things inherent to the United States. Well, if those people had tasted this cherry pie, it would be baseball and cherry pie. That’s what I was trying to convey.”

I have an unreleased song about Ding Dongs but haven’t worked out the bridge on the accordian yet.
