Bravo Network Renames “Real House Wives of…” Franchise to “Gold Digging Bitches of…” Franchise.
By Phil Buckridge • Oct 29th, 2008 • Section: TelevisionNew York, NY – The Bravo Network announced today that due to pressure from its parent company NBC, they were renaming their very successful “Real Housewives of…” Franchise to the more apropos title “Gold Digging Bitches of…”.
The franchise, which started with “Real Housewives of Orange County” and has since been spun-off into “The Real Housewives of New York City” and “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”, was starting to slip among the “actual housewife” and “future housewife” demographics because of its grossly inaccurate portrayal of housewives. Because of that, NBC pressured Bravo into changing the name of the franchise to something more apropos of its content.
Jeff Zucker, the CEO of NBC said, “After analyzing our survey results, we found that American housewives are offended by having to share a title with these women. Real housewives have the unbelievably hectic schedule of running kids all over the place while trying to maintain a household. They don’t have personal assistants or chauffeurs, and they sure as hell don’t spend their days at a spa retreat while the nanny looks after the kids. Because of this, we are ‘calling it like we see it’ and forcing Bravo to change the title of the franchise to “Gold Digging Bitches of Orange County”, “Gold Digging Bitches of Atlanta”, etc, etc.”
Laura Waring Peterson, who has been featured on every season of “The Real Housewives of Orange County”, was upset by the title change saying, “I am most certainly not a gold digger. In the first season of the show, I struggled to make ends meet after divorcing yet another wealthy husband. However, when I met [new husband] George, I was immediately attracted to him because I knew he could provide both my family and I with security, which was extremely important to me. The fact that I have since returned to living a completely opulent lifestyle was just part of that package.”
Kim Zolciak, who is featured on “Real Housewives of Atlanta” was also upset saying that she was attracted to “Big Papa” [her current boyfriend who is not featured on the show] not because he was rich, but because he was able to “provide a little security for her two children.” She also claimed, “I didn’t even know he was wealthy until he accidentally let it slip that he was a successful real estate developer while were riding in his Bentley on the way to board his private jet.”
Tamra Barney, who was part of the third season of “Real Housewives of Orange County” was also put off by the news claiming, “I am most certainly not a gold digger, but really, who can blame a girl for wanting a man that can provide her with a little security in her life.”
Calls to Scott Dunlap, the show’s creator, were not returned.
