Due to a recent rash of injuries in the defensive secondary and a suspension to CB Adam “Pacman” Jones, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has contacted the North Carolina Prison Board about the possibility of signing Rae Carruth and converting him to a defensive back.

While Jones’ actions have drawn the ire of numerous NFL employees, including NFL Commissioner Roger Godell, Jones maintains that Carruth’s presence in Dallas could have a positive effect on both the locker room and the city itself.  He stated in a press conference earlier today that, “We are all aware that Rae has had some minor character issues in the past, but he’s now had almost eight years to reflect upon his actions and become a better person.  I think if Rae were to be paroled, the Dallas Cowboys would be a great fit for him as he transitioned back into civilian life while lacing them up for America’s team every Sunday.

Carruth, who was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder, has supposedly been keeping himself in game shape just in case an NFL team was able to expedite his parole.  He was a first round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 1997 and as a wide receiver, averaged 12.4 yards per catch as a rookie.  He played two more injury shortened seasons after his rookie year and his career was abruptly halted when he was sent to prison for his role in the shooting death of Cherica Adams, a woman who was pregnant with Carruth’s twins.

When reached for comment, the North Carolina Prison Board released a statement saying, “The fact that Mr. Jones thinks we would consider releasing Mr. Carruth so that he could become a member of the Dallas Cowboys is absolutely ridiculous.  Rae has served just under eight years of a twenty-four year prison sentence and he’s nowhere near eligible for parole.  Unless Mr. Jones is willing to pony up a luxury box on the 50 yard-line of their new stadium opening next year, we don’t have anything to talk about.”  Jones responded by saying that he didn’t know about the 50 yard-line, but was optimistic the sides could reach an agreement for a box around the 35 yard-line.

This is by no means the first time that Jerry Jones has tried to acquire a player with a checkered past.  In fact, he has a well documented history of disregarding a player’s off-field conduct when trying to fill out his roster.  Most recently, he signed waived Chicago Bear DT Tank Johnson and traded for suspended Tennessee Titans CB Pacman Jones, who have both been involved in numerous off-field incidents during their careers.

  1. I think it’s great that Mr. Jones wants to give Rae Carruth another chance… Mr. Carruth should never have been convicted of that crime in the first place, the evidence was overwhelming that he did not pay to have Miss Adams killed… The idiot that killed her is the one that should have gotten the death penalty, that was a trial that I feel it was a sympathy verdict and the people of North Carolina should be ashame of themselves for the comprimised verdict that they returned and destroyed this young man’s life…. Please don’t get me wrong, my heart goes out to Ms Adams Mother and hope that God continues to keep his arms around her and her grandson.., but Mr. Carruth was not the one who had her daughter killed…

My hat goes off to Mr. Jones for what he is trying to do… God Bless him !

  2. Rae Carruth is exactly where he belongs and it is exactly where he should stay. There was overwhelming evidence that he orchestrated the killing of his pregnant girlfriend. He is a monster who thought only of himself and his money. Dream on!

  3. Jerry Jones is a complete insensitive jerk. When will the public react to this pandering to criminals by not supporting the interprises this type of jerk controls. Rae Carruth committed a heinous crime because he had the money to order a young pregnant woman murdered. Obviously Mr. Jones must believe Carruth was forced into this frame of mind. Like Carruth Jones puts money before morality and murder. Even if the state were to parole Carruth, I would hope if any team were to sign him the public would act quickly to boycott the team.

  4. I challenge anyone to go to court tv.com and read the entire case. I did and after careful review found that I would have more trouble sleeping at night if I helped convict Rae. In fact the only thing that was for certain is that a killer was granted the opportunity to drain our funds while he rotts in jail for the remainder of his pathetic life. Based on the facts Rae was dealt a mighty blow. God bless Jerry for trying to help him. I will go as far to say that let he is without sin cast the first stone. I know that when we look at how beautiful Cherica was and the damage it caused it only seam intelligent to convict. However, read the facts. Even a non interested jailer produced a signed statement which indicated that the shooter told her he did this because Rae backed out of funding a drug deal at the last minute. I am just merely stating that she had her career to lose and nothing to gain by coming forward. God bless this mess and much respect to the Adams family. You guys are strong and God heals all wounds!

  5. Rae Carruth needs to serve every bit of time he has in jail. I am glad he can not hurt another woman or child.

  6. If any of you who believe Rae Carruth is innocent are the same ones who believe OJ Simpson is innocent as well. I’m sure if it was YOUR daughter that was killed ….you would be singing a different tune! Grow up America

  7. Rae Carruth was railroaded in that trial. Fact of the matter is, He’s 100% innocent. His only mistake was initially consenting to fund Vanbritt Watkins drug enterprise, he thought twice about it then pulled out. That led Vanbritt Watkins to put the murder off on Carruth to run his life and career. Did you watch the trial? It was so clear he was innocent.

  8. where is the money trial for services rendered- that coincide before or after these alleged crimes against rae carruth – because i’m quite sure the convicted idiot hit-man didn’t once convince me that he would let anyone make him do anything – and that means even conjure up his unconvincing under-oath testimony……
