Dan Marino Sick of Trent Dilfer Sending Him Pictures of His Super Bowl Ring
By Phil Buckridge • Oct 8th, 2008 • Section: SportsFresno, CA – In a brewing feud between two former NFL quarterbacks, Dan Marino has admitted that he’s sick and tired of Trent Dilfer sending him pictures of the Super Bowl ring Dilfer won with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001.
According to Marino, “It started out all in good fun. We’d see each other and he’d always find a way to bring it to my attention. He’d put on a shit eating grin and talk about how heavy it was, or slowly bring up his ring hand to itch his forehead or rub his chin…all sorts of bullshit to get it directly in my line of sight. I usually laughed it off, but lately, he’s gone too far. Three times I week, I get what appears to be fan letter in the mail, but when I open it, it’s an autographed picture of Trent and his ring that says, ‘I feel like I won it for both of us! XOXO, Trent Dilfer’. And every one of them is postmarked in Fresno, CA, so I know it’s him.”
Marino played sixteen seasons for the Miami Dolphins and set numerous NFL passing records along the way. He was also inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005. However, he was never able to win a Super Bowl title, and as a result, is generally regarded as the best quarterback to never win a Super Bowl.
Dilfer was the quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens when they defeated the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV [January, 2001]. That Baltimore team had arguably the best defense in NFL history, which has made Dilfer, an average NFL quarterback in his playing days, generally regarded as one of the worst quarterbacks to ever win the Super Bowl.
Angering Marino even more is the fact that, “Fucking [Boomer] Esiason gave him my cell phone number. Now I get a picture message of the ring from Trent every god damn day. I just want to slap that fucker.”
When reached for comment, Dilfer said, “If you think that’s funny, wait until the next time I see he and his wife. When the three of us are standing together, I’m going to ask her if she wants to try the ring on. The look on Dan’s face is going to be priceless.”
Dilfer is also retired from football and currently works for ESPN as an NFL analyst, where he gets to show off his Super Bowl ring to millions of viewers every day.
