Dallas, TX – With the upcoming NHL season about to begin, veteran Dallas Stars center Mike Modano has made it this season’s goal to once again drink Zima out of the Stanley Cup.

Modano first realized that goal in 1999 when he was a member of the Dallas Stars team that won the Stanley Cup on a controversial goal by Brett Hull, and he’s been fighting tooth and nail every season since then in an effort to experience it again.

Modano put it in perspective by saying, “I’ve had a lot of great moments in my hockey career, but that was by far the best.  The rush I got from tilting the Stanley Cup to send a stream of cold, crisp Zima into the back of my throat is something that may not even by matched by the births of my future children.

Proof of this excitement couldn’t have been more evident on the day Modano got to spend with the cup, which is a tradition that each member of the winning team gets to experience during the off-season.  While most players take the cup back to their hometown or to their families, Modano had other ideas.  He took it to the Coors brewery in Golden, CO so that it could see where Zima was brewed.  He was given a special behind-the-scenes tour by Peter Coors himself, and after it was done, Modano fashioned a makeshift throne out of Zima cases, set the cup on top of it, and invited workers from the Zima production line to take pictures with the cup (workers on the Coors Light, Blue Moon, and Keystone Light lines were not offered that opportunity).

Though some are skeptical of the Stars’ chances to win it all this year, Modano is very optimistic, saying, “It’s true I’m not as young as I once was, and I know that a championship playoff run can add twenty or more games to an already long season, but the mere thought of being able to drink more Zima out of Lord Stanley’s Cup is always enough to keep me motivated.”  He also added, “Nothing is more contagious in the locker room than hard work, and I plan on setting the bar high.  I can’t wait to lace up the skates this season.”

Last season’s success also gives the Stars reason to be optimistic.  They finished last season with a record of 45-30-7 and made it to the conference finals where they were eliminated in six games by eventual champion Detroit.

Modano and the stars open their season October 10th at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
